Our History & Mission
Access: Supports for Living began in 1963 with a simple, powerful idea: that people, regardless of disability or circumstance, have the ability to work, contribute, and live meaningful lives in their communities.
That belief still drives us today.
Now one of the largest human services providers in the Hudson Valley, Access – together with its affiliates, The Guidance Center of Westchester, Meaningful NY, and New York Families for Autistic Children – serves more than 20,000 people each year. Our work is person-centered, trauma-informed, and grounded in respect for each individual’s goals and choices.
We support children, adults, and families facing mental health and substance use challenges, living with intellectual or developmental disabilities, or navigating everyday barriers like housing instability, food insecurity, and underemployment. We also partner across healthcare, community organizations, and public systems to connect care and strengthen communities. We bring together services that are too often fragmented so people can get what they need, when they need it.
But what sets Access apart is how we work.
Through our Culture Playbook and strategic plan “RECIPE,” we hold ourselves accountable to creating an environment where people matter, where teams work together, and where ideas turn into action. We focus on what counts: using our resources wisely, engaging our workforce, improving outcomes, supporting independence, connecting people to care quickly, and building a culture where everyone belongs.
We are also investing in the future of care through the Access: Center of Excellence – a hub for learning, innovation, and workforce development that strengthens our staff, our partners, and the broader field.
More than sixty years in, our mission hasn’t changed: We help people live the healthiest and fullest lives possible.

We recognize that true impact requires innovation. We embrace new ideas and approaches in all aspects of our organization, and are always willing to question the status quo, adapt to change, and evolve.
Leadership & Collaboration
We commit to being leaders: not only in providing high-quality support and care, but also in collaborating with partners who share our commitment. Through teamwork and shared purpose, we extend our reach and amplify our impact.

Smart, Data-Driven Care
We believe in working hard and working smart. By using data to guide our services, measuring outcomes, and thoughtfully integrating technology, we deliver better care more efficiently and effectively.
Community Resource & Inclusion
We aim to be a vital resource for our region, strengthening community supports and fostering inclusion for individuals with differences. We work to help vulnerable people overcome barriers and fully participate in community life.

Forward-Looking & Growth-Oriented
We stay informed and inspired by ongoing developments from new insights about health, brain, body, disability, and illness, to shifting understandings of inclusion and care. We welcome growth, discovery, and transformation, for both the people we serve and our organization.
Through these commitments, we help shape communities where individuals, regardless of ability, are valued, supported, and empowered.
Our History
In 1963 a group of parents created a program to help foster the independence of their children, seven young people with developmental disabilities. They found area educators to teach skills, established a work center for packaging and assembly and found customers among area businesses. They felt their children were capable of productive work, and believed that this would not only encourage their independence but enhance their well being.
Today the agency they launched is a valued resource to the people, families and communities across nine counties in New York and the highly regarded provider of a wide range of constantly evolving services and programs. While as many as 10,000 individuals now receive widely varied services each year, the spirit and initiative of the founding families is honored in a shared commitment to promoting the independence, health and happiness of every person the agency serves.
